|Desjardins had the most influence within the Mafia in Montreal and was closely associated with Hells Angel leader Salvatore Cazzetta. During the 1980s, he was considered Vito Rizzuto’s right-hand man and was sentenced, in 1994, to a 15-year prison term for his role in a conspiracy, with several Hells Angels, to smuggle cocaine into Canada. |
By the time Desjardins finished his sentence, Rizzuto was incarcerated in the U.S. and the rest of the Rizzuto organization appeared weak. Joe Di Maulo was Raynald Desjardin's brother-in-law, and the two formed an ill-fated alliance with acting Bonanno underboss Salvatore Montagna, who had been deported from the US. A dispute over control of extortion rackets and bookmaking led to an attempt on Desjardin's life. The waterlogged body of Salvatore Montagna was found two weeks later, on November 24, 2011 on the shore of Île Vaudry on the L'Assomption River, in the city of Charlemagne, Quebec.
|Six men - Vittorio Mirarchi (38); Jack Simpson (73); Calogero Milioto (44); Pietro Magistrale (64); Steven Fracas (31); and Steven D’Addario (38) — admitted their role in the conspiracy to kill Montagna. Desjardins pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder last year and has a sentence hearing, separate from the other six, scheduled in September.|
Jack Simpson is believed to have been the man who actually pulled the trigger and killed Montagna.
Joseph Di Maulo was shot twice in the head on November 4, 2012
